answer if you have done this trip or what you thought of it info etc. We are going to Guangzhou to Xining then take the train to Lhasa and spend about a week in Tibet. After we are going to Congquing and take a four day cruise up the Yangtze river. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated. I have been to China a couple times but not this trip. Thank you.

You are taking a trip that is often done by Western tourists and a fantastic trip over all. If you have traveled to China, you know the pitfalls, but you shouldn’t have any trouble. I did the trip down the Yangtze and it is beautiful. I thought the dam would have messed it up.

China’s government provides heat to the country based on the Yangtze River . . . if you are north of the river, you receive heat and if you are south of the river, you do not! It’s not based on actual temperature, but on mere location.
Loosely phrased, the country is split into “northern” and “southern” China.

This has an interesting slide show on China and includes references to books, etc. It uses the terminology “north and south China” in reference to the Yangtze River.
Good luck!

Question by hhh h: Tours in China?
Are there any relatively inexpensive tours that take you to Beijing and include at least a Yangtze River cruise or Hong Kong? Please let me know of some…

STA Travel does some great tours. If you’re 26 or under (especially a student) then you could really benefit from their discounts. I was originally going to go on one of them, then my circumstances changed and I spent 5 weeks in Beijing. Hope that helps!

Question by Kris 010: is there a slow boat to china? I’m looking to get across the pacific, NOT on a cruise ship?
maybe there’s a boat I can work on to get to china from seattle? Or I could pay a bit and get on one. I’m not looking for a cruise, just a long boat ride across the pacific

Question by Andy: Touring china?
OK, im 18 but 19 next year and I’m planning before university to go traveling (once again) with my mate.
I love Chinese culture so a trip to china seemed perfect… looking through brochures and various websites I found that a tour would be the best to take it all in rather than being stuck in one place.
HOWEVER big problemo is that tours = middle aged persons and pensioners and the last thing i want is to be ferried around in a convoy of tourists; I want to explore china myself!
Does anyone know of any good UK (or foreign) tour operators that can give you this freedom but at a reasonable price. We are looking at traveling from the major cities such as HK, Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, etc and include the Yangtze river cruise. We do have a budget of about £2k
Thanks in advance.

your going to have a tough time finding one. the problem is china law on tour groups, they have specific laws restricing tourists. They still maintain a sense of isolationism.
