Why is the Yangtze River important to the three gorges dam?

Question by Amieness: Why is the Yangtze River important to the three gorges dam?
I’m doing a case study on the three gorges dam for my GCSE, and missed out on a a week’s worth of notes, and completely missed why it was important to the dam, so am therefore stuck in answering my question. Help, please?

Answer by Miss Understood
The People’s Republic of China decided to dam the Yangtze in 1994 with a steel and concrete wall that would take 15 years and over $ 30 billion to build. When completed, the dam will contain twice the amount of concrete of the Itaipu Dam in Brazil, currently the world’s largest. It will create a five trillion gallon reservoir hundreds of feet deep and about 400 miles long, able to absorb an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter Scale. It will allow 10,000-ton freighters to easily navigate into the nation’s interior and increase agricultural and manufacturing opportunities. As the world’s largest hydroelectric power plant, the dam’s turbines are expected to create the equivalent electricity of 18 nuclear power plants.

Q&A: Does China really make our Tomahawk cruise missiles?

Question by mikenike1244: Does China really make our Tomahawk cruise missiles?
And if so, what other weapons do they make for us?

So i came here hoping to find an answer

I wouldn’t doubt it that most of the components are built overseas.

Most of our uniforms are made in India or China and a Made in the USA tag is just slapped on it by the companies that are selling the uniforms to the U.S. military so they can claim that it is made in the U.S.A.

Defense contractors and supplies are not known for their ethics or honesty.

Do you know how much that phone call would cost you? Add satellite charges and roaming charges and international carrier charges….

There may be a signal, but it depends on where in the river you are.

China–Yangtze River Cruises?

Question by ka: China–Yangtze River Cruises?
I am considering visiting China in the fall and have the option of two different itineraries: one includes a 3-night Yangtze River cruise and the other a 4-night cruise. Anyone have any advice about which would be better (in the middle of a 22 day tour)? Any recommendations for tour companies? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by bkk
If you are in Chongqing there are many tour companies ( near the river). Go to as many as possible and see which offers the best value for money ie. (free?) side tours, type of cabin, food etc and take your pick!
3 or 4 nights? You must choose for yourself.
Ask around the dock for ‘ jimmy’ he has one of the biggest tour companies and a good reputation but Iv’e lost his card. Sorry.

Is cruising the Yangtze river still worth it now that the dam is operational?

Question by Winnie: Is cruising the Yangtze river still worth it now that the dam is operational?
Has anyone cruised down the Yangtze river and the Three Gorges recently? I heared rumors that the cruise would not be as dramatic since the dam has been in operation. Anyone have pictures? If you had to choose, is it more worth it to visit Guilin instead?

Best answer:

Answer by drjkfu
To be honest, I was always told it wasn’t worth it BEFORE the dam. I lived in China for five years. I not once went on that cruise, and I have been to hundreds of places. My favorites for pure natural beauty (in no particular order) are Huangshan (shan=mountain), Lushan, Huashan, Zhouzhaigou, Guilin/Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie. Of these places I mention, Huangshan and Guilin/Yangshuo are most convenient. I am taking friends to Guilin/Yangshuo for my FOURTH visit next summer. The Li River cruise and a day on a bicycle through the villages between the Karst mountains are must do’s.
