The Chinese government is constructing the largest dam ever built in an effort to control the Yangtze River.  In at least 5 paragraphs I want you to give details about this dam and what kind of impact it will have on China and possibly even the world. You should include information about the structure itself, the positive and negative results of building the Three Gorges Dam and possibly your opinion on the matter which should be supported with reasons why. Lesson 20 goes into more information about this “dam project” ha ha ha.  (Terrible I know.)

IF U CAN GIVE AN EXAMPLE

Come on, think what they’re asking.

Research the dam, it’s called the Three gorges dam – everything you need is on the internet, use your initiative.

Q&A: When is the best time to get citizenship?

Question by hazeltine4: When is the best time to get citizenship?
My fiance is a Chinese citizen, but has had her permanent Green Card (permanent resident) in the U.S for nearly 15 years. We are planning our wedding and honeymoon. She currently only keeps her Chinese citizenship to make it much easier to visit her parents in China, without needing a visa every year.

For our honeymoon, we are planning a Mediterranean Cruise, where she would need multiple visas for the countries we wil visit — at least four visas.

When should she get her US citizenship — before, or after the wedding and honeymoon? As Chinese women do not change their names after marriage, it would not affect her name – other than maybe to go to her “American” first name.

And no — she does NOT need to get married to an American to stay in the U.S.! She has a great job and career with a U.S. corporation.

Lastly — what is the best way to get all the visas needed for the honeymoon??? It seems like most require Embassy visits in Chicago now.

Thanks!!!
Also, we are planning a September of October wedding this year, if that makes a difference.
Also, China does NOT allow dual citizenship. After the citizenship in US, she will lose Chinese citizenship, but she is OK with that.

Best answer:

Answer by Terry
I don’t see that it makes much difference. But the wait from application to citizenship could be 18 months – so that will impact your planning. Once she’s filed her application, it’s much harder to travel outside the US, until the citizenship is granted.

Q&A: Is my marriage an under-resourced and oversold project?

Question by Joe L: Is my marriage an under-resourced and oversold project?
I think I took an order for a project without getting a full set of specifications or test requirements. This was supposed to be working in 3 years and it’s gone on for 12 instead. We’ve missed all the deadlines, people are quitting, and the system still doesn’t work. I think we are in worse shape than the deep tunnel in boston, or the yangtze river dam in china.

If this was a small R&D effort we would probably have thrown in the towel long ago. But this is different… one of a kind. If it works like the power point picture we could dominate the world. We could make energy from water. Feed the hungry. And free all prisoners.

We’ve got most of the mechanicals built and three million lines of software code. There is a team of people in bangalore running a simulation program to debug it but some cows ate the master disk and they have to start all over.

We contacted several governments for help, including the US, russia, and switzerland, but they told us “sorry, we can give you the speed of light and the recipe for coca-cola, but we have no idea how to make your wife fall in love with you all over again”.

I don’t want to give up, there is way too much invested. But I have no idea what to do and I’m very frustrated.

Is it possible that Obama could cut me in on the stimulus package?

Best answer:

Answer by Ryan N
If you stop your self-pity party (I’ve seen several of your posts already) and take action, you’ll find that it’s a lot more beneficial to you, your wife, and your children than moping about what’s wrong.

YOU ARE THE MAN IN THE FAMILY. DO SOMETHING. Don’t just sit there and watch your family fall apart. Get off your butt and start working on your marriage.

Why should we pass the START treaty when it will undermine our national security? 9 reasons not to pass it?

Question by : Why should we pass the START treaty when it will undermine our national security? 9 reasons not to pass it?
1 The treaty restricts both the United States and Russia to a maximum of 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads. For the U.S. military this would represent a decline of well over 90% from a peak of approximately 31,255 strategic nuclear warheads in 1967. The treaty would also limit the total number of deployed ballistic missiles or nuclear bombers to 700.

#2 As part of the treaty we would tell Russia exactly where our few remaining nuclear weapons are and allow the Russians to inspect those sites. So if the time ever came for the Russians to strike our emasculated nuclear arsenal, they would know exactly where to find our few remaining nuclear weapons.

#3 The treaty is so vague about some of the key issues that the two sides are already arguing about what it means. For example, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that the restrictions on missile defense are “clearly spelled out in the treaty” and that these restrictions are “legally binding”. But in a recent letter to U.S. Senators, Barack Obama stated that the treaty “places no limitations on the development or deployment of our missile-defense programs.”

#4 Nuclear weapons technology is rapidly spreading around the globe and the need for a missile defense system is greater than ever. If this treaty does restrict our ability to build a missile defense system (as the wording of the treaty clearly seems to indicate), that is a very serious threat to our national security. What is going to happen one day when a rogue nation or a rogue terror group launches a nuke at us? Excuses will not cut it at that point.

#5 The treaty completely ignores the very serious imbalance that exists between the U.S. and Russia when is comes to tactical nuclear weapons. Today it is estimated that the Russians have approximately 10,000 tactical nuclear warheads while the U.S. only has a few hundred. These tactical nuclear warheads can be delivered by cruise missiles, long-range artillery or aircraft. The treaty does nothing to change those numbers. This would put the United States at a very serious strategic disadvantage.

#6 The treaty does nothing to restrict the quality of long-range missiles. Currently, Russia is busy modernizing their strategic long-range missiles. The United States is not doing the same. Once again, this could leave the United States at a very serious strategic disadvantage.

#7 The Russian government has shown that they are not trustworthy. Of course, the same thing could be said about the Obama administration. Anyone who trusts anything that Barack Obama says at this point is an idiot.

#8 North Korea already has nukes, Iran is developing nuclear technology and a number of other important nations such as Venezuela are rumored to be interested in nukes. This is simply not a good time to be getting weaker.

#9 If World War III were to break out over the next decade, the United States would very likely find itself facing a Chinese/Russian alliance. The combined conventional military forces of China and Russia are far superior to those of the United States. The only major advantage that we had was our edge in strategic weaponry, and this treaty would greatly weaken that advantage.

Unfortunately, most of those that will read this article simply are not going to care. The vast majority of Americans believe that the Cold War is over and that war with either China or Russia is next to impossible.

But if this treaty is passed, and there is every indication that it will be, then it is going to make a nuclear first strike against the United States much, much more likely.

Previously, everyone knew that if they messed with America they could potentially face being nuked into oblivion. But if this treaty is passed, our nuclear arsenal would be slashed to the bone and our potential enemies would know precisely where to strike to take out most of our remaining nukes.

Q&A: Plz help! What would you choose?

Question by xXallieXx: Plz help! What would you choose?
For my 16th birthday next year my parents are being very generous and they are letting me plan a trip due to the fact that I don’t want to throw a party, but I’m kind of stuck. After a lot of complications it’s come down to two choices:
1. Go on a cruise with friends. I would absolutely love this because it would be fun to have friends around
2. Pick any place in the world to visit. Obviously travelling to somewhere like china would be a stretch but places like Paris, Rome etc.
Idk what to do!! I wanna be with friends but going to somewhere else in the world would b fun. The world trip thing would just be with family though. What would you guys choose? I feel the cruise night be better because the world trip may end up feeling like a family vacation, something we can plan any other year. Help! Plz don’t call me spoiled. I’m surprised my parents would offer this and in very thankful

How do they get all the knock off designer bags in Nassau Bahamas?

Question by : How do they get all the knock off designer bags in Nassau Bahamas?
I just returned from my cruise to Half Moon Cay and Nassau Bahamas. When our boat docked at Nassau we of course had to visit the Straw Market. I quickly learned that everyone was selling the same thing with very few unique Bahamian items. My friends and i were continuously asked if we wanted to look at the purses that seemed to be in huge piles in each vendors section. And while walking the aisles I just wondered how all these women were getting these purses. I know they are illegal and when shipped from where ever they came from (I’m guessing China) they have to go through customs. So how and where are all these poor women getting these knockoff bags from?
P.S. Even though there were few Bahamian made items I found a woman making hand-made bracelets from wood, string, and beads. I picked out which design that i wanted the bracelet to be, what the wood would be formed into and what colored beads that I wanted. In all the cruise was great and I will surely be going back again.

Q&A: the 25 largest naval battle ?

Question by sinnombre2: the 25 largest naval battle ?
This is my top.

battle of the delta(1178bc)>While there is no documentation for any pursuit of the defeated Sea Peoples, who fled to the Levant, Egypt was saved from the fate of total destruction. This is the first naval battle in the history.

Salamis, (480 BC)>. 371 Greek ships defeated 1,271 Persian ships in this decisive battle. Greek triremes had a crew of about 200 while their small penteconters had 50 oarsmen. With 1,642 ships altogether, it is thought possible that 200,000 sailors, soldiers and marines took part.

Cape Ecnomus, (256 BC)>. Like Salamis, Ecnomus was also a single engagement where 680 ships were fighting in a very small area. Some historians[who?] accept Roman claims that Rome had about 100,000 personnel. If this were true, which is unlikely, it would make it probable that at least 200,000 Roman and Carthaginian sailors and soldiers were involved.

Red Cliffs, (208 bc)>, the battle between Cao Cao and Sun Quan on China’s Yangtze River – the exact location is debated – during the late Han Dynasty. Cao Cao’s forces are said to have numbered 220,000–240,000 while Sun Quan’s fleet is said to have had 50,000 marines, the total claimed therefore being some 270,000 or 290,000 in all.

Actium, (31 BC)>. Battle between Mark Antony, Cleopatra and Octavian for control of the Roman world; more than 500 warships were involved

The fall of Constantinople(1453)>The end of the east roman empire and the start of the Turkish domination in oriental Europe.

Battle of Dan-no-Ura (1185)The Minamoto Clan defeated the Taira Clan, leading to Minamoto Yoritomo become the first Shogun of Japan

Yamen, (1279). The battle which ended the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty’s conquest of Southern Song Dynasty. It is claimed that more than 1,000 Song Dynasty warships were destroyed by the Yuan Dynasty near Yamen, Guangdong, China.

Battle of koan (1281)>The Japanese fleet defeated the mongol fleet stoping the mongol expansion for the east.

Lake Poyang, (1363)>. Claimed to be the largest battle in terms of personnel. Sailors of the Ming rebel force, said to be 200,000 strong, commanded by Zhu Yuanzhang, met a Han rebel force, claimed to be 650,000-strong, commanded by Chen Youliang, on Lake Poyang, China’s largest freshwater lake.

battle of diu (1509)>After centuries blocking the orient wey,the Turkish empire is defeated for the Portugal empire. This battle gave to the Europeans new ways to the india and china and the start of the European colonialism.

Lepanto, (1571). 212 Holy League galleys and galleasses against 272 or more Ottoman galleys, galliots etc (484+ total). The forces of the Holy League inflicted a crushing defeat on the Ottoman fleet. This was the last major naval battle, at least in the Western world, to be fought entirely or almost entirely between rowing vessels. Around 150,000 personnel took part in the battle. Lepanto is thought by some historians[who?] to have been the most decisive naval battle since Actium in 31 BC.The Turkish fleet lost more than 200 vessels and suffered at least 20,000 casualties.

Spanish Armada, (1588)>. In a series of engagements in the English Channel, a Spanish invasion fleet of 130 ships was driven north by English forces numbering nearly 200 ships. Rounding the British Isles into the Atlantic, the Armada was destroyed by powerful gales on its return to Spain.

the english armada (1589)>One year after the spanish armada, the queen elizabeth sent 18.000 soldiers against spain. drake was wanting destroy the half of spanish ships, wean portugal of spain and conquest the azores for help the english pirates attack the spanish colonies. If drake,s plans were completed, the spanish empire entered into a major crisis. This is a great naval battle.Only 5000 came to england.Spain was the most powerful country in the sea until 1639 (battle of the downs)

Myeongnyang, (1597)>. A large Japanese assault on Admiral Yi’s remaining 13 ships. The Japanese attacked with 333, but were routed by the smaller force.

Battle of the downs(1639)>After this battle, holland was became in the first naval power in the world.

Cartagena de Indias, (1741)>. 186 British ships attacked Spanish fortifications and six warships in Cartagena de Indias (present-day Colombia), resulting in a major defeat and heavy losses for the British: 50 ships lost and 18,000 casualties. The battle is thought to be the largest military action in maritime history (in terms of tonnage) until the Battles of Normandy and Leyte Gulf surpassed it in 1944.

Quiberon Bay 1759 – destroyed French naval power for the remainder of the Seven Years War and the birth of the british empire.

Battle of Chesapeake Bay (1781) – the French prevented Royal Navy from supplying Gen. Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, and 5 British ships were damaged with 336 casualties. Not a humiliating naval defeat, but the outcome was humiliating – the Briti
Vyborg Bay, (1790)>. 257 Russian vs 241 Swedish sailing ships and rowing vessels (498 total) Russia is the new mistress of the Baltic sea.

. Trafalgar, (1805). A British fleet of 27 ships-of-the-line and six other vessels, commanded by Nelson, attacked and destroyed a combined French and Spanish fleet of 41 ships, including 33 ships-of-the-line, ultimately capturing 21 ships of the line and destroying another. Almost certainly the largest battle, at least until the American victory at Santiago in 1898, in terms of the damage and/or casualties inflicted by gunfire alone. One of the most decisive battles in history.

the battle of Juncal(1827), where Argentina beat fleet overwhelmingly Brazilian, despite the vast numerical superiority Brazilian, allowing Argentina to victory in the war and attempts to dominate Brazilian expansionist half of South America.
