When, where, and how would you spend a 3-month sabbatical with a 5-year old boy?

Question by latebloomer: When, where, and how would you spend a 3-month sabbatical with a 5-year old boy?
It will be for next year, 2007.

1. Renting a villa in Italy like in Enchanted April has always been enticing to me. Wonder what the costs are like.

2. One idea we have is to rent a house in Italy for a month or two and tour a few places in Europe by train in the meantime; then a week-long trip to Asia (minus mainland China) or Canada; then relax some at home. Although airfares may add up quite high.

3. Our boy (will be 5 yr old by the time) is very active and outdoory, wherever we stay, we need plenty of choices for physical activities (mud play is fine too :-).

4. Cruise ships and islands are out, we prefer solid grounds :-). Although a short trip to an island is fine.

5. All of us enjoy hiking, our little boy does well on that.

6. Whatever you suggestion, please recommend a season also. We can go anytime between January and August.

Thank you very much.

How do we as the U.S.A balance the need for energy with the conflict of securing energy security?

Question by trevathantim: How do we as the U.S.A balance the need for energy with the conflict of securing energy security?
In recent years, new threats to energy security have emerged in the form of the increased world competition for energy resources due to the increased pace of industrialization in countries such as India and China. Although still a minority concern, the possibility of price rises resulting from the peaking of world oil production is also starting to attract the attention of at least the French government.[1]

Energy security, or security of supply, is a key component of energy policy in many countries. Since all economic activity requires the use of energy resources, the continuing availability of energy at a price that protects economic growth is a major concern of governments
Strategically, China’s communist leaders are using a Leninist approach in an attempt to influence “those who oppose and those who support China’s interest’s abroad.”

“Once China’s leaders make the distinction between friend and foe, they can develop and tailor [propaganda] themes to counter opposition and advance their overall agenda,” the report said. “Moreover, such distinctions position China to reward ‘friends’ abroad, or alternatively, punish ‘enemies’ to enhance its own position in the balance of power.”
China continues to build up its military in utmost secrecy. Its military spending is estimated to be many times greater than the official estimate of $ 20 billion annually, the report said.

Based on observation of U.S. forces in the 1999 conflict in Kosovo, China has adopted an air-defense system called “Three Attacks and Three Defenses,” that calls for attacking stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and helicopters and defending against precision bombing and missile strikes, electronic warfare and enemy reconnaissance, the report said.

China’s military buildup has led the Pentagon to quietly build up its military forces in the Pacific in recent months. Attack submarines have been deployed in Guam, along with stockpiles of air-launched cruise missiles. Bombers also have been moved to the region to deal with either a conflict in Korea or possibly a war over Taiwan, defense officials said.

I’ll go with either “Take Me Home Down Country Roads” or “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” both by John Denver (1943-1997).

I was on the chang jiang (I believe americans call it the yangtze river) a couple of years ago. When?

Question by Da Ben Dan: I was on the chang jiang (I believe americans call it the yangtze river) a couple of years ago. When?
is the expected completion date? Is it now partially operational…It was quite an impressive structure when I saw it ,albeit incomplete…I know there were some concerns of the weight of the water held back in such a seismologically active area….is all of this now resolved?
Has the water level in the 3 gorges risen by how much? any info ..thanx

Answer by NeuroProf
The Three Gorges Dam is ready to hold water on June 1 as scheduled. The water is supposed to reach 135 meters in 15 days. During this period, the water rising will exert some influence on the navigation-
This is from a website detailing the project:
I will say that this website is a bit of cheerleading- the seismic worries are not resolved, and cannot really be any more than those same worries in the San Andreas Fault.

Hi everyone,
Ok heres the situation..

Now my dilemma is this.. I’m moving home to Canada,BC sometime between September and December.
I have read many horror stories of flying dogs oin cargo on airplanes.. and am really scared to risk that. Not to mention it would be a 13 hour flight.
What other options do I have?? I was thinking a cruise maybe.. but I’ve emaied a bunch of cruises and can’t find any from china- canada, and especially any that allow large dogs!

Please help!!! I love him like a son and don’t want to leave him behind!!

Is Croatian Visa needed for Taiwan (Republic of China) passport traveller?

Question by Juana: Is Croatian Visa needed for Taiwan (Republic of China) passport traveller?
I am holding a Taiwan (Republic of China) passport, I will join a Carnival cruise to arrive Dubrovnik 7am and leave 7pm the same day; do I need a visa to enter to Croatia? If yes, since this is only a one-day visit, do you think Carnival can work as a “guarantor ” for me to have a sort of “land permission” temporary visa? Thanks a million for the quick answer.
Tks very much for the prompt answer.I even learned that Permanent Resident like me can apply this visa ON LINE (on the website you provided). But I am a ‘will-to-be’ Carnival Cruise traveler. The ship will arrive Dubrovnik, Croatia 7am and leave at 7pm the same day. For this short visit, do I still need a visa? 0r, cruise line can be a sort of ‘Guarantor’ for me to embark on “land permission” basis (give by Croatia Customs)??
Taiwan doesn’t have diplomatic ties with Croatia and papers have to be sent to Japan for process, this is the study I made so far. Unfortunately my travel agent couldn’t answer me whether the cruise line could work as a ‘guarantor’ for me to obtain a ‘landing permission’; and I haven’t heard from Carnival Cruise either on this issue. I am putting my question on “Cruise Travel” under YAHOO ANSWERS to solicit more answers.

Taiwan is not mentioned on the official site of the Croatian foreign office site where you can check if a Visa is required http://www.mfa.hr/MVP.asp?pcpid=1615

According to a 3rd party site the visa is required http://croatia.visahq.com/requirements/Taiwan/

Therefore it is best if you check at the local embassy for the official confirmation but in my opinion I think you would most certainly need a visa and there would not be an alternative. Documents are carefully checked on the Croatian borders & aiports

There is no Croatian embassy in Taiwan but this means that your area will be under the cover of a embassy in a neighbouring country – here you can see all the possibilities and if you click on the country you can get the address & other contact details http://croatia.visahq.com/embassy/Taiwan/

EDIT – I can’t say for sure so it is best that you check directly either with the embassy or if you have made the booking for the cruise with a travel agents then they should be able to advise as well – this *could* be classed as a transit visa and therefore different requirements apply, but as it is still within Croatian territory again I doubt it. Either way it is best to check officially
