Help paraphrasing a Paragraph?

Question by Jack I: Help paraphrasing a Paragraph?
I need some help paraphrasing the following paragraph. Any help would be greatly appreciated:

A constant issue in China is the year round flooding. Between late May and early August 1991, China suffered severe floods
affecting 18 provinces. The major flooding caused widespread destruction and loss of
life. The Yangtze River and the Songhia River
were mainly the cause of the floods, and the government wanted something to prevent another major flood outbreak. The Three Gorges Dam project was first proposed by Sun Yat-sen in 1919 but the idea was
dropped due to political and economic difficulties. Major floods brought
the idea back to life again in 1954. Furthermore, in 1958 due to positive political climate, Lin Yishan, head of the
Yangtze Valley Planning office favored the construction project. Then
Chinese leader, Mao Tse Tung also had the vision of the world’s
largest hydroelectric dam in China.

A continuing problem in China is the waterlogging. From late May until early August 1991, China suffered from severe flooding, which affected 18 provinces. This serious problem caused massive casualties and damage, and the government proposed measures be put in place to prevent other similar situations from occurring. The Three Gorges Dam Project of 1919, first proposed by Sun Yat-sen, was abandoned because of economic and political opposition. However, the serious flooding of 1954 served to support the plan. Furthermore, in 1958, a favourable economic climate led to the head of the Yangtze Valley Planning Office, Lin Yishan, supporting the project. Mao Tse Tung also envisioned a huge hydro-electric dam being constructed in China.

How to convince my parents to let me stay home alone?

Question by Something something in the month of May: How to convince my parents to let me stay home alone?
Alright so this year my school goes on a trip to China and my best friends are going. I really want to go, I’ve never been to China before and I doubt I’ll ever have the occasion to go again.

My parents bought us a cruise this winter. Thing is, they chose a ship which I dislike, and to the caribbean islands which I’ve been to twice already. I’m not being difficult here I’d still like to go on the cruise but for more than 1000$ it’s not worth it at all AND because of that I won’t be able to go to China(the record of collected money for a trip is 800$ , I don’t have the time for that and it’s not enough money).

How can I convince my parents to cancel my trip? The problem is they won’t let me stay home alone, I can understand one week is a lot but I’ve told them they can spam my cellphone, I’d pay the costs, that my brother(24) could probably come for the week to keep company, that I’ve never done anything to lose their trust and that I’m responsible, but they still won’t.

I’m losing so much here, just for a small trip I’m not even going to enjoy because of all the negative.

What can I do else to finally convince them? I’m 16

Thanks a lot! This is really important to me

You like so many other 16 year olds are not recognizing that your family time with your parents is a temporary thing. Some day your parents will be gone or so old they can not get around much anymore. At that time you will wish you had one more day with them when both you and they were younger. You are only 16 and have your whole life ahead of you. They are paying for the trip so suck it up, grab your bikini and shades, go on the trip and relax.

USA AT WAR WITH EUROPE? (PLEASE READ BELOW)?

Question by historyman321: USA AT WAR WITH EUROPE? (PLEASE READ BELOW)?
I am doing research for a paper set in an alternate reality and would LOVE to hear the opinions of some AMERICANS, especially servicemen. The scenario is:

Without warning the USA launches a surprise nuclear attack against china and destroys it, the Chinese counter attack is ineffective. The world is shocked and outraged by this. The USA then sends its elite and rapid response units to the far east to contain what’s left of china. Within a few weeks of skirmishes China surrenders and humanitarian aid is allowed in. This attack is claimed to be in self defence though is used as an excuse to instigate martial law and set up a police state in the US, a shadowy new government has taken over. The rest of the world fears that the US will not stop at this. Russia claims that if the US launches another missile she will retaliate for her own defence and EU intelligence points that Europe is next.

Rather than wait to be attacked the EU puts together a secret plan to launch her own non-nuclear surprise attack aimed at the USA’s ability to wage long distance war and its militaristic leaders. The raid consists of submarine launched cruise missiles, and long range bombers and air-launched cruise missiles. Within 24 hours a 1/3 of the US air force is destroyed as well as the entire Atlantic fleet and the east coast command centres. Both the EU and US cannot use their nuclear arsenals due to the threat of a Russian counter attack.

After five/six months, the EU combine forces have withstood air raids against their colonies in the Caribbean, launched further air raids from these bases to the east coast and have driven the US navy from the Caribbean as well as US ground forces from the Bahamas (Protecting Florida) in very bloody battles. With air bases set up in the Bahamas the east coast and Florida are hit heavily, with the US losing air superiority. The EU is ready for an amphibious invasion of south Florida to build further air bases to reach the central USA and to destroy the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The EU hopes this be enough to bring the USA to the negotiating table.

NB: This scenario has been heavily researched and is held to be realistic (as far as stories go). The above is only a casual outline. (hope you enjoyed it)

Let them find somebody to stay/check in on you during the week. Maybe a family member they trust? You could convince them by letting them set rules and/or keep tabs on you.
